Dealing With Earwax The Right Way Is Critical

"It took a 1 minute phone call and a 5 minute appointment to get my hearing back"

If your ears feel blocked or voices and other sounds around you seem to be muffled, then there’s a strong chance that it may be due to an overaccumulation of earwax. Left untreated, a buildup of earwax can cause a variety of negative health conditions, like temporary or sudden hearing loss, feelings of fullness in your ear, dizziness, headaches, balance issues, infections, and ear pain.

What Is Earwax?

Earwax, or cerumen, is a sticky, wax-like oil produced by glands in your ears for lubrication as well as cleaning out dirt and debris. Because of the natural benefits it provides and the potential damage you can cause to your ears, it is better to avoid digging earwax out of your ears or applying over-the-counter earwax remedies

Symptoms Of Earwax Buildup

Earwax typically clears itself from your ears when you chew or talk, but it can accumulate and cause blockage and irritation, producing symptoms like:

  • Earaches or itching
  • Tinnitus (unexplained ringing or noise in the ear)
  • Conductive hearing loss
  • Excessive eardrum pressure

If the production of excessive earwax is an ongoing issue, we can recommend specific products designed to reduce earwax production without interrupting or upsetting the delicate balance of necessary earwax production.

What NOT To Do When You Experience Earwax Buildup

Cotton swabs are the most common instruments used by people to remove earwax buildup, but they can make things worse by pushing the blockage further down the canal, risking damage to the ear. Being too aggressive with a cotton swab or other instrument has the potential to harm your eardrum by accidentally pushing the earwax too far.

Reserve cotton swabs to clean the outer portion of your ear canal rather than going too deep, and leave deeper cleaning to a hearing care professional.

At-Home Earwax Removal

There are plenty of at-home earwax removal kits available in your local drugstore, but not all of them are both safe and effective. Before using an at-home kit, you should speak with a hearing care professional because not all formulas provide the proper chemical balance to help remove earwax without doing damage to your ear canal. Also, at-home removal might not be the right choice for individuals with certain types of conditions.

Safe In-Office Earwax Removal

Removal is usually a simple, in-office procedure that can be safely performed in a few minutes by our hearing care experts at Arnold Hearing Centres using state-of-the-art equipment and specialized training to ensure you’re hearing better and keep your ears healthy.

The most common method involves irrigation similar to at-home earwax removal kits. However, we have access to a stronger earwax removal formula with carbamide peroxide, which we use in combination with irrigation to break up stubborn buildup more effectively.

A less common method makes use of a curette and suction to gently scrape and remove earwax blockage from your ear canal. With this method, we can see what we are doing and are specially trained to use this technique without causing damage to your ears.
