You turn the volume up, but it still sounds muddy or unclear. Then someone else in the room complains that it is too loud. Sound familiar? 

The good news is you don’t have to settle for this struggle. There are many ways to make TV listening more enjoyable, and I want to share some practical strategies highlighted in a recent Consumer Reports article, along with what we recommend at Arnold Hearing Centres. 

Try Dialogue-Enhancing Headsets 

Specialized headsets, often called TV listeners or stethosets, deliver the sound right into your ears. Because they bypass the room acoustics, they can make voices stand out much more clearly.

Adjust Your TV’s Audio Settings 

Most modern TVs now come with built-in sound modes designed to make dialogue easier to understand.  

Look in your settings for options like “Dialogue Boost,” “Clear Voice” or “Speech Mode.” These features reduce background noise and music while enhancing the tones that carry speech.  

It may take some experimenting to find the mode that works best for you, but once you do, it can feel like a brand-new listening experience! 

Stream Audio Directly to Your Hearing Aids 

If you wear hearing aids with Bluetooth compatibility, you may already have access to the best solution out there. With the right adapter, your TV can send sound directly into your devices, just like streaming a phone call or music.  

This gives you crystal-clear audio without outside interference, and it can be adjusted perfectly for your hearing needs. Patients often tell me it feels like “HD sound for TV.” 

Turn on Closed Captions 

Closed captions are often overlooked, but they are one of the simplest and most effective tools you can use. 

Even if your hearing aids or TV settings do most of the work, captions provide a reliable backup. They make sure you don’t miss any important dialogue, whether it’s a punchline in a comedy or a critical detail in the news. 

Captions are available on almost every TV and streaming platform, and once you get used to them, you may wonder why you didn’t turn them on sooner. 

Watch for New Technology Like Auracast 

Technology is evolving quickly, and one of the most exciting innovations is Auracast. This new feature, available in some of the latest TVs, uses Bluetooth to broadcast multiple audio streams.  

You could connect your hearing aids or compatible headphones directly to the TV and get a personalized sound experience without affecting the main volume.  

This is exactly the kind of breakthrough technology that will make home entertainment more inclusive in the coming years. 

Consider a Soundbar with Speech Enhancement 

If you are thinking about upgrading your home audio, a soundbar can be a game-changer.  

Many new models use advanced processing to make speech clearer. Some even use artificial intelligence to detect dialogue in real time and automatically adjust it so voices stand out from music, explosions or crowd noise.  

This option is especially good if you share the TV with family members who want the full cinematic sound while you want clarity and comfort.
