What Is a Central Auditory Processing (CAP) Assessment?
A Central Auditory Processing (CAP) assessment can provide valuable insights into your auditory processing abilities, essentially revealing how your brain interprets the sounds you hear. This test can help diagnose auditory processing disorder (APD) and guide appropriate treatments.
Pre-Assessment Recommendations
We recommend a psychoeducational assessment prior to the CAP assessment to identify underlying cognitive, memory, attention, and learning difficulties that could impact the CAP results. We will also perform a hearing test to check your hearing ability, ensuring accurate CAP assessment results.
The CAP Assessment Process
The CAP assessment includes several standardized tests to check how well you process sounds. These tests look at different aspects of auditory processing, such as:
Listening to different sounds in each ear (dichotic listening)
Understanding speech with less information (monaural low-redundancy speech perception)
Focusing on sounds in noisy environments (auditory figure-ground)
Processing the timing of sounds (temporal processing)
During the assessment, you will do interactive listening exercises, and you can take short breaks as needed.
