At Arnold Hearing Centres, a big part of our day-to-day life is helping clients select the appropriate type of noise protection for their work or lifestyle. Not only are there different colours, styles and brands, but there are also different sound filters and more.
Although the decision may seem daunting, when you come for your appointment, it is important that we select the model that will be right for you. By following the steps listed below, we can make an informed decision with you to get you started on your journey with a custom solution.
What Are You Listening To?
The first thing we want to know is what types of sounds or environments you would like to use them in. Custom noise protection can be worn for various reasons, from operating machinery to playing the violin.
Although these are vastly different situations, each has a unique solution. If you would like to wear them for multiple environments, that’s also something that we can take into consideration. Where you would like to wear your custom molds helps us recommend the right type.
What Are the Different Types of Hearing Protection?
There are three main types of noise protection molds; solid, vented and filtered.
A solid earmold provides noise reduction of up to 27 dB (decibels) by suppressing all types of sounds. This is typically a good fit for anyone who is working with heavy machinery and doesn’t need to carry a conversation at the same time. Although these are typically used for occupational noise, they can also be used for attending live events, like loud rock concerts or sports games.
A vented earmold provides a small amount of sound into the ear, allowing speech to be heard while also reducing damaging high-frequency loud inputs by up to 22 dB. This solution is an excellent option for supervisors on the job or for anyone who needs to be able to hear speech while in the presence of excess noise.
Lastly, a filtered plug consists of a standard noise protection plug with a vent covered by a sound filter. The filter reduces sound at all inputs but maintains the integrity of the frequencies, ensuring a natural sound for the wearer.
This is especially important for those wishing to wear noise protection while playing music. This type of mold comes in various levels of noise reduction ranging from 9 dB–27 dB, making it the most versatile option.
Why Should I Consider Custom-Fitted Noise Protection?
Although there are several great one-size-fits-all products regarding ears, no two are the same.
Custom noise protection is made by taking an impression of the ear canal using silicone, allowing your clinician and the production team to ensure your molds are comfortable and sealing in the ear properly. A properly fitted earmold means we provide maximum protection from harmful sounds.
Are you still trying to decide which style is best for you? Rest assured that when you book an appointment with the staff at Arnold Hearing Centres, our hearing care coordinators and clinicians will take the time to help you select the best option for all the noisy situations life can bring.
